Neurofeedback at The Stepwell Center is EEG-based biofeedback that helps you learn to self-regulate brain wave patterns. Sessions are calibrated to the qEEG baseline recorded during our 2 to 3 day comprehensive assessment in Lakeway, Texas, and the training runs alongside CBT, EMDR, and DBT in your prescribed plan. What neurofeedback actually is

Neurofeedback reads the brain wave activity you are already producing and mirrors it back in real time, so you can learn which states to dial up and which to dial down. The training is read alongside the rest of your assessment, never as a stand-alone treatment.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that reads the surface electrical activity of your brain in real time and mirrors it back as a visual or auditory cue. When your brain produces patterns near a target band, the cue responds favorably. Over a course of sessions, you learn a self-regulation skill the way you would learn balance or breath control. A peer-reviewed meta-analysis of randomized trials describes small-to-medium effects on sustained attention in children with ADHD, with the strongest evidence in protocols that include sufficient session counts and standardized training parameters.

At Stepwell, neurofeedback is one of our diagnostic and treatment services, and the baseline recorded during your comprehensive assessment calibrates each session. We do not treat neurofeedback as a primary intervention. Sessions run alongside CBT, EMDR, DBT, group work, and family sessions inside your prescribed plan. The qEEG map sets the starting parameters, and your care team adjusts them as the training progresses.

The clinical case for neurofeedback has matured most in attention and trauma. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of neurofeedback for post-traumatic stress disorder reported moderate beneficial effects on PTSD symptoms, with positive secondary effects on anxiety and depression. Inside a training session

What the training actually looks like.

You arrive for a neurofeedback session after the qEEG baseline has already been recorded during your comprehensive assessment in Lakeway. A clinician explains the protocol, fits a soft cap of surface electrodes against your scalp, and applies a small amount of conductive paste under each sensor. The cap is comfortable to wear and washes out cleanly afterward.

Each session usually runs 30 to 45 minutes. You sit quietly in a calm room facing a screen or listening to a tone that responds to your brain activity in real time. When your brain produces patterns near the target, the cue moves favorably; when it drifts, the cue softens. You are not consciously controlling brain waves. You are learning a self-regulation skill the way you would learn balance, and the feedback loop does the work of pointing your brain toward steadier ground.

Sessions are scheduled into your prescribed level of care, whether PHP, IOP, Evening IOP, or Outpatient, and they sit alongside your pharmacogenetic profile, psychological testing, and clinical work. Your care team tracks progress against the original qEEG baseline so the training stays calibrated to your individual signal rather than a default protocol.

  2. Trauma and PTSD

    Meta-analyses report moderate effects on PTSD symptoms with neurofeedback training, with positive secondary effects on anxiety and depression. We apply it alongside EMDR and trauma-focused CBT, never as a replacement.

  3. Reads with the rest of your plan

    Neurofeedback is one input in the prescribed plan. The qEEG baseline, pharmacogenetic profile, psychological testing, and clinical interview are read together, and the training is woven into the level of care that fits.
